IBN RUSHD Fund for Freedom of Thought presents the
IBN RUSHD Prize 2001 to
the Egyptian Writer and Critic Mahmoud Amin El Alem

On December 8th, 2001 Mahmoud Amin El Alem received the third IBN RUSHD Prize for Freedom of Thought in the Literaturhaus Fasanenstrasse in Berlin. He is honoured for his struggle for freedom and democracy, for his critical thinking and his political commitment, for his writings and analyses, his engagement in support of open dialogue and services to a culture of rational dispute and enlightenment.

Der Vorsitzende des IBN RUSHD Funds for Freedom of Thought, Nabil Bushnaq,  hält eine Begrüßungsrede, worin er die Entstehung des Vereins, die Wahl des diesjährigen Preisträgers und die Begründung der Wahl erklärt.
Nabil Bushnaq, Chairman of the IBN RUSHD Fund for Freedom of Thought, gives a welcome speech. He explains in brief how and why the fund was founded and for what reasons the prize was given this year to Mahmoud Amin El Alem. 
Dr. Hamid Fadlalla, Beiratsmitglied des Vereins, hält die Laudatio. Sie handelt von El Alems Leben, seinen Kampf um Meinungsfreiheit und seinen literaturkritischen und kulturtheoretischen Werken.
Dr. Hamid Fadlalla, member of the board, makes a speech in M. Amin El Alem’s honour. His eulogy deals with M. Amin El Alems rich life, his struggle for freedom and his many works in literature, theory of culture and philosophy.

Mahmoud Amin El Alem spricht in seinem Vortrag von den verschiedenen Deutungen von  Kultur und Zivilisation, von der neuen Weltordnung, der Vormachtstellung des globalisierten Kapitalismus, und von seiner Hoffnung auf eine neue umfassendere Art von Globalisierung, durch die die jetztige Globalisierung überwunden werden kann. Er warnt davor, Globalisierung als Amerikanisierung zu sehen. 
In his speech Mahmoud Amin El Alem explains his point of view about culture and civilization, about the new world order and the predominance of globalized capitalism, but also about his hope to see another more comprehensive kind of globalization that  will soon replace the present one. He warns Arabs not to interpret globalization as an americanization.
Mahmoud Amin El Alem spricht vor seinem Publikum anlässlich der Verleihung des IBN RUSHD Preises an ihn im Literaturhaus in Berlin. Unter den deutschen und arabischen Gästen befinden sich Akademiker, Journalisten, Intellektuelle und Künstler verschiedener Nationalitäten.
Mahmoud Amin El Alem speaks in front of the audience on the occasion of receiving the IBN RUSHD Prize 2001 in Literaturhaus in Berlin. Among the German and Arab guests are academics, journalists, intellectuals, poets and artists of different nationalities.

Im Anschluß an den Vorträgen findet eine Pressekonferenz statt, in der El Alem auf die Fragen der Journalisten antwortet. Rechts neben ihm sitzt Farouq Abbushi, Vorstandsmitglied im IBN RUSHD Fund und Gründer des arabischen Kulturverein al-Qantara (Berlin). 
After the festivity interested people are invited to attend a press conference, at which El Alem answers the questions of the journalists. Mr. Farouq Abbushi, member of  the executive and founder of the cultural society al-Qantara (Berlin), is sitting at his right. 
Auf die Frage eines Journalisten erklärt El Alem, dass es viele Sorten von Intellektuelle gibt, und dass alle auf ihre Art helfen können, die Situation zu ändern. Man sollte Andersdenkende nicht zu schnell verurteilen und immer die Nützlichkeit für das Allgemeinwohl im Auge behalten. 
El Alem explains, that there are many different types of intellectuals and that every one in his way can help to change the situation. You should not condemn those who think differently and always keep in mind their usefulness to the public welfare instead.
