Other Activities of the Fund
Other activities of the Fund are of critical nature.
We send protest letters to where we feel that the right for freedom of
speech has been injured. Examples:
1) 5.2.1999: Censorship on al-Khubz al-Hafi in AUC/Cairo.
Prof Samia Mehrez was in great trouble for teaching Muhammad Shukry, Son’allah
Ibrahim, at-Tayyib Salih at the American University in Egypt

2) 11.10.1999: Appeal in support of Marcel Khalifa/Lebanon,
who was accused in a Lebanese court of hurting Muslim feelings because he
integrated passages from the Koran on the Prophet Joseph (Yusuf) in some of his
songs

3) 18.5.1999: Congratulation for introducing the right for women to vote
in the presidential elections in Kuwait (after this petition the law was
unfortunately changed again)

4) 9.10.1999: Appeal in support of Ahmad al-Baghdadi/Kuwait, who was kept in custody,
because he dared to say his point of view, namely that Prophet Mohamed’s
mission in Mekka had been
unsuccessful.

5) 27.5.2001: Appeal in favour of the Egyptian writer Nawal el
Saadawi,
who was accused in court of having insulted Islam in an interview, in which she
allegedly had said bad things about the ritual of Mekka pilgrimage. She was
nearly been declared apostate and nearly been forced to a divorce like Hamid
Abu Zaid before.

6) 25.9.2001: Appeal in cooperation with Internationales Friedenskolleg e.V. addressed to Foreign
Minister Fischer to urge him take the initiative and bring back peace
negotiation between Palestinians and Israelis.

7) Letter to the Chaiman of Germany’s first broadcasting corporation
ARD/ Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), Prof. Fritz Pleitgen, with an appeal to expand the
broadcasting radius of the Arabic program of Radio MultiKulti/Senders Freies
Berlin, a liberal voice, so that it be received by all Arab speaking hearers in
Germany.
