The IBN RUSHD Fund
for Freedom of Thought was founded on December 10th, 1998, in
commemoration of the 800th anniversary of Ibn Rushd's (Averroe’s) death, and
on the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Universal Human Rights. It is
an independent organization registered in Germany. Its founding members are
mainly of Arab origin who live in Germany. The sphere of activity, however,
is the Arab countries. The fund’s goals The fund’s goal consists in fostering freedom of thought, creativity
and sciences in the Arab World. The IBN RUSHD Fund wants Arab culture
to strive for rationalism and tolerance. Supporting and spreading freedom of
thought, creativity and sciences is an important starting point to catch up
with the process of world civilization. To this end, the fund collects money
to honour people who have rendered outstanding services to these goals.
Prizes 1st IBN RUSHD Prize 1999 was given to Arab media. The
winner: Al
Jazeera TV-Channel in Qatar. 2nd IBN RUSHD Prize 2000 was given for the emancipation
of Arab women. The winner: Issam A. Abdulhadi, President of the General Union of Palestinian Women. 3rd
IBN RUSHD Prize 2001 was
given on the 8th of December 2001 to the Egyptian writer and critic Mahmoud Amin El Alem for his struggle for freedom, democracy
and enlightenment as well as his political commitment. 4th
IBN RUSHD Prize 2002 will
was given to an Arab Parlamentarian, who has rendered outstanding services to
the realization of democracy and multi-party system in his or her country.
The winner is Dr.
Azmi Bishara, a Palestinian
member of Knesset in Israel. 5th IBN RUSHD Prize 2003 was awarded to Mohammed Arkoun,
emeritus pofessor at the University of Sorbonne (III) for his outstanding
academic work in Arabic history, encouraging the dialogue betw. tradition and
modernity 6th IBN RUSHD Prize will be presented for Sonallah Ibrahm, the
Egyptian Noverist who has enriched
modern engaged literature with outstanding writing. Who supports the idea ? The IBN RUSHD Fund received encouraging letters from many Arab
intellectuals, among others Aziz al-Azmeh, Adounis, Muhammad Abid al-Gabiri,
Sadeq Galal Al Azm, Shawkat al-Kailani, Ahmad Sidqi ad-Dagani, and Haidar Abd
