”Freedom of Thought” Prize to Dr. Azmi Bishara

(Bonn/IN-Press, October 31, 2002) The Ibn Rushd Fund in Berlin, so designated after the Arabic name of the philosopher Averroes (1126-1198), will award this year’s prize for ”Freedom of Thought” to the Arab member of the Israeli parliament, Dr. Azmi Bishara. In a press statement of the Fund, it was made known that Dr. Bishara will receive this prize for his commitment to the rights of the Palestinians and his support of understanding between Palestinians and Israelis. The Ibn Rushd Fund awards this prize for the fourth time. The Arab satellite TV channel Al-Jazeera in Qatar was granted the first prize for ”Freedom of Thought” in 1999. This prize is awarded to persons or organisations that strive for the spread of democracy in the Arab world.
